Sept 21 Self-Defense Class for Wheelchair Users
We are excited to announce that on Saturday, September 21st from 1-3 pm, a Self Defence Class for Wheelchair users. The class will be held in the Group Fitness Room at the Ability 360 Sports and Fitness Center.* All ages are welcome, and the event is open to wheelchair users and their spouse or caregiver. The only two requirements are that the person regularly uses a wheelchair for mobility and a completed liability waiver. The waiver can be downloaded here or signed at the event. Who is involved
The City of Phoenix is sponsoring this free event in conjunction with the Arizona Spinal Cord Injury Association and the Ability 360 Sports and Fitness Center. The instructor, Jui L. Chiu, is a former Army Specialist and CPS investigator, a certified private investigator, and is employed by the City of Phoenix in Homeland Security/Emergency Management. He specializes in Kung-fu, Shuri-Ryu, and Shotokan Karate martial arts. Instructor Jui Chiu will show users how to get out of a choke hold, the importance of being aware of your surroundings, and how to use your wheelchair as a self-defense mechanism in an attack.
Transportation options
Covered parking is available at the Center. A light rail stop and a bus stop right in front of the Center make public transportation an option, as well. Other choices are Dial-a-RIde and taxi cabs.
The goal
The goal is to teach wheelchair users self-defense skills. The class will focus on self-awareness, self-confidence, self-defense, and life-saving defense skills that anyone can master using Kubotan and everyday objects.
